MCN's membership includes a wide range of museum professional representing more than 600 major cultural institutions throughout the world. Association activities include:

 Annual conference: hundreds of attendees explore the latest advances in museum automation services through presentations; panels and vendor demonstrations.

 Publications: published three times annually, Spectra carries articles, project updates, product news and reports from MCN's Special Interest Groups.
•
 Online publication: our dynamic and easy-to-read online publication, eSpectra, focuses on the latest relating to technology in museums, archives and libraries.
•
 Listserv: MCN maintains an Internet discussion list (MCN-L) devoted to all aspects of automation in museums.

Special Interest Groups: MCN has many Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which represent an array of topical interests as well as regional areas. Topical groups include Archaeology and Anthropology, Intellectual Property Controlled Vocabulary and Small Museums.

CIMI is a consortium of museums, professional organizations and related cultural institutions. Working together to remove barriers to sharing valuable information, we do what no single institution can do alone.

Our work revolves around five key areas:

 Standards: encouraging open, standards-based approaches to creating and sharing digital information.
•
 Test Beds: applying standards to museum information in demonstrating projects that invite member participation
•
 Current Awareness: keeping our members abreast of the latest in digital technology
•
 Advocacy: giving cultural heritage a voice in the shape of the digital future
•
 CIMI Institute: teaching the latest methods and technologies so they can be applied in real world settings
